Deterioration of general condition toward septic shock

Case history

The patient, Mr. Derome, is 54, a labourer, married and father of three children. He was admitted to the unit just over 16 hours ago. He has been suffering from hyperthermia for three days and a pain in the right flank radiating to the lower back with hematuria. The medical diagnosis is right pyelonephritis.

A month ago, the patient was treated with oral antibiotherapy for a urinary infection. The patient is a non-insulin-dependent diabetic taking no specific pharmacological treatment other than watching his diet.
