Anaphylactic reaction to a blood transfusion

Case history

Mr. Alexandrovna, a 20-year-old student involved in a bicycle accident, was admitted two days ago to a post-surgical floor following an emergency splenectomy. He also suffered a left wrist sprain. He has no other medical history. He is currently receiving a blood transfusion of PRBCs for an Hgb of 78 g/L.

It is 8:10 AM on POD 2 for Mr. Alexander. The primary nurse for Mr. Alexandrovna has received an important call at the desk and asked you to monitor him for a few minutes as he is having a blood transfusion of PRBCs started at 8:05 in the morning for an Hgb of 78 mmol/L. His pretransfusion vital signs were the following, T 37.0°C, P 77, RR 16, BP 110/76, SpO2 99% on RA.
