Alcohol withdrawal syndrome in a pre-operative patient

Case history

Susan Reed (standard patient) is a 65-year-old admitted to the Orthopedic Unit from the Emergency Department during the night. She is a retired nurse who lives alone and is independent for ADLs. She was brought in by ambulance yesterday at 1:00 PM a few hours after tripping on a carpet and falling in her home. She sustained a right proximal humerus fracture that will require ORIF (open reduction internal fixation) once she is cleared for surgery by internal medicine, cardiology and anesthesiology. Assess and intervene as needed.
