Mastitis

Case history

Mélissa Larivière, 36, delivered her third child vaginally 12 days ago. Her husband is present and the couple’s two other children (10 and 6) are helping care for their new little sister.

Ms. Larivière has been breastfeeding exclusively since birth and it is going well. Two days ago, she noticed that her right breast was red, intensifying during the day in the upper outside quarter. Nearly constant pain has also been getting worse for two days, and since this morning, she has been shivering and feels very tired.

She phoned the birthing unit where she gave birth and the nurse suggested she come in.

It is noon, and you have to take the VSs and administer the first dose of IV antibiotics to Ms. Larivière.
